The lawn bowls club was originally formed by a group of enthusiastic local folk in 1976 with the present size of 6 rinks established in 1979 courtesy of the ground offered by the owners. Over the years the facilities have been upgraded and provides a functional clubhouse to suit the needs for members and visiting teams on match days.

The bowls grounds are maintained by the clubs volunteers, with support of the local council on the surrounding perimeter. 

Shiptonthorpe's recreational ground and child play area are linked to the bowls club with plenty of parking for all.
